Alchemical concoctions at The Walker Inn
The Walker Inn is a delightful tuck away at the rear of LA’s rakish Hotel Normandie. The nifty nightery, presided over by maverick mixologist Devon Tarby and her crack team of taverners, is all about intelligent elixirs and giddy up gastronomy. This time around, the proprietors have provided one of the most novel (and nostalgic) cocktail clinics in the land: artisanal spirits inspired by, you guessed it, a Middle School science fair project. The whole experience is carefully planned around a 5-course prixe fixe menu and each beverage concept requires using a bit of your brain (that is, until your neurons have all but vanished into never-never land). Ranging from memory recall games to checking out chain reactions and even liquefying nitrogen (remember The Science Guy Bill Nye?!), you engage in alcohol-addled mental workouts that are fun, fresh and flavorful. The whole point, says Tarby, is “to let patrons re-live their nostalgic ‘Middle School years’ and jog their memories on the principles of molecular science.” After a peppy round of clever cocktail mash-ups, you can’t help but feel a sense of elated, albeit inebriated, achievement as you’ve earned high marks at the Walker Inn’s mixology workshop.
