LUCA GUADAGNINO – ‘SUSPIRIA’ Reboot
The brand new Suspiria trailer features bone fragments, possessed ponies, icky maggots and scary supernatural phenomena.
Doing a good film reboot can be tough, especially if that film is an epic cinematic treasure. And only the most intrepid directors take on such a project. In the case of SUSPIRIA, cult master blaster Luca Guadagnino (he made Call Me By Your Name, etc.) has taken up that challenge, adapting the horror flick in the image of his insane and outlandish brain. We’re stoked!
Rather than merely replicating the 1977 horror masterpiece, Guadagnino (above) has added his own artistic bells and whistles, altering its garish palette and updating its ultra-eerie aesthetic and soundtrack. Following the plot of a young American ballet dancer who “travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is something far more sinister and supernatural…she becomes increasingly terrified after a series of gruesome murders ensure, and she slowly unravels the dark history of the academy.” Perfect.
Dakota Johnson assumes the lead role, supported by Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz. The film is rumored to be as shocking and sinister as the trailer, and a few of the cast members and camera operators had to seek therapy after filming the freaky flick. Dakota Johnson said this: “we were in an abandoned hotel on top of a mountain…It had 30 telephone poles on the roof, so there was electricity pulsating through the building, and everyone was shocking each other. It was cold as shit and so dry.” CinemaCon recently debuted a snippet of the film with disturbing footage of ballerinas being butchered, blood-soaked bathrooms, people levitating and maggots feeding on someone’s face. Guadagnino said he was aiming for “cold, evil and really dark” visuals with music from Thom Yorke.
Playing Susie Bannion — one of the most compelling and bloodcurdling horror characters in cinema history — the re-make is certain to be a bang-up blockbuster. “It is the most brilliantly scary film I have ever seen”, said Dakota. “It’s graphic and gruesome in the gnarliest way,” said one camera technician. Wow.
Anyway, we’re extremely excited. Take a look at the first trailer below, and stay tuned for SUSPIRIA’s release in Fall 2018.
