Art God – Marko Kusmuk
Artist Marko Kusmuk makes painting beyond the heroic domains of Abstract Expressionism. He creates no-nonsense, neo-surreal compositions where space oscillates, perspective is disrupted and human cognition is probed and externalized. Move over, Marina Abramović!
Born in Bosnia, educated in Italy, and based in Belgrade, Marko generates jaw-dropping bursts of painterly exuberance. His canvases crackle with physical fervor, psychic frayed nerves, fleshy abstractions, and vivid depictions of mind, body, spirit, angst and understanding.
Obsessed with the mysteries of the human psyche and the infinities of the subconscious, his figurative paintings, awesome abstractions and surreal sculptures come close to portraying the existential struggle we’re engaged in. It is if he is painting through the prism of God – what Nietzsche had in mind when he wrote, “One must have existential chaos in oneself to create,” or what Dostoevsky meant by, “He who is ready to capitulate becomes a God.” Deep, freaky and phenomenologically cool stuff.
We love his deep submersion into human cognition and the way he depicts color, undulating rhythms, and hallucinatory optical wormholes. Wow! Next trip: to witness Marko Kusmuk’s sublime, cerebral and fierce fantastical figurations in Serbia. Peep the works below…
