A Really Random Walk – ‘Weird Capitalism’
Artists Alan Warburton, Alan Butler and Nora O. Murchú offer a tongue-in-cheek critique of ‘capitalism’ via their newest installation at Transfer Gallery deep in Brooklyn. Their exhibit fizzles with cheeky ad hoc arrangements (digital and analogue), freakanomics, histrionics and hilarious as f#ck optics.
Over at Transfer Gallery in faraway Brooklyn, Alan Warburton and Alan Butler have implemented a surreal and twitchy exhibit, titled ‘Weird Capitalism.’ Examining our clusterfuck capitalist economy in all its diffuse, depraved and hyper-diverse awesomeness, there is eye-popping cacophony, agglomerationism, disorientationism and kooky-cool pop-cultural dioramas. In particular, the artwork examines the endogenous structures of capitalism, unpacking the moral and metaphysical meaning of the law of supply, demand, surplus value and the virtue of selfishness.
Starring Mark Fisher (a fitness freak and entrepreneur), tech goober Elon Musk and myriad other caricatures and avatars based on Neoclassical notions of homo economicus (‘economic man’), the presentation is “presented not as an attempt to develop alternatives to our current modes of employment, but explores the part of capitalist structure that is only open for negotiation through its own language.” Um, hmmm.
Curated by Nora O. Murchú, this excellent, enthralling and slightly subversive exhibit makes you consider just how awesome capitalism actually is, despite its obvious kinks. We love the vivid videos, killer graphics, algo art and sassy audio-visual vim.
A social construct based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned, capitalism – a fusion of free markets, cold reason and guiltless Nietzschean self-assertion – is brilliant, beautiful and bountiful (duh – just look at this work!). Sure, we’re all ensnarled in an often alienating and agonizing existential grind; but it’s for the greatest good, remember; for the greatest number, accompanied by the greatest gewgaws 🤙🤘!
Capitalism is all about personal and artistic autonomy, and reflects these essentials: voluntary choice for mutual benefit, freedom of production and consumption; individual liberty and a lively, laissez-faire spirit. It has created the highest standard of living ever known to humans, and always delivers the goodies while accelerating economic, artistic and personal evolution ad infinitum (so long as doofus Bernie and that dumb ho Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez don’t fuck it up).
