Charlize Theron pummels a bunch of Cold War euro goons in her epic new film “Atomic Blonde”
“Atomic Blonde” is a gorgeous and gratuitously violent flick about a sexy spy chick who kicks ass – spy-on-spy style – in Berlin at the height of the Cold War.
Charlize Theron plays Lorraine Broughton, a covert agent in Her Majesty’s Secret Service with a perfect bod, bangin’ blond bob and a penchant for Prada pumps. She takes a licking from a range of swinish euro spooks but then, like an avenging goddess, eviscerates her opponents with the skill of a samurai warrior.
The film is based on “The Coldest City,” a darkly shadowed, minimalist graphic novel written by Antony Johnston and illustrated by Sam Hart (Kurt Johnstad penned the script and David Leitch directed it). With a cunning balance of character, action, amazing optics and intrigue, the flick is excellent at honoring the Cold War espionage thriller genre.
The film teems with topsy-turvy camerawork, crashing cars, cool soundtracks (from Nene, The Clash and Depeche Mode, etc.), close-quarter’s combat and a titillating lesbo sex scene. Styled to the hilt and fucking hardcore, Lorraine likes to puff cigs, drink hard liquor, and chill-out in ice cube-filled bathtubs (literally). Like a blonde James Bond femme fatale, Theron’s character is fashionable and adroit, with an ornamented pathology – seductive, damaged, predatory and revenge-seeking.
There’s lots to get excited about here, from Lorraine’s 80s YSL gear to her steamy dreamy girl-on-girl sex scene (with Sofia Boutella) to the epic hand-to-hand bloodletting, not to mention the film’s fantastically hard-boiled dialogue. We love this movie. Peep the pics and trailer below.
