We’re obsessed with Howie Lee’s ‘Four Seas – 四海’ video!
Howie Lee is a producer, visual artist, songster and spry polymath. He’s at the bleeding-edge of Beijing’s music and club scene, and just released a new EP and gorgeous video that raises existential questions about our hyper-connected, angst-imbued world.
Titled ‘Four Seas – 四海’, Howie’s heart-stirring and hypnogogic art will fuck you up fast and foment freaky deaky fantasies. Head-honcho at Do Hits Records and Beijing’s brashest beatsmith, Howie synthesizes classical Chinese acoustics with experimental, post-modern riffs. His recent album, called ‘Cloud Lamps’, explores insanely awesome instrumental styles — from hip hop beats and acid-house to erhus sounds and spike fiddles. Through music and visual art, Howie investigates globalization in all its vectors and scalars, creating beautiful chaos, cacophony and electro everything, originating off the charts vocal coos, abstract rhythms and surreal specters that will pummel your brainwaves.
His digitally-drenched, dada-esque video is a savvy meditation on the nature of time, space and place, giving careful consideration to global interdependence, urban life, modern alienation and ‘safe spaces.’ “A lot of time I feel my body is trapped in this urban cube and physically cannot go anywhere,” explains Howie. “I feel that the loneliness created by social tension is unhealthy. We live in a world that can sometimes feel solipsistic and unsafe.” Peep out the pics and killer vid below. Wow 哇!
