Chromat’s Fearless Femmes – SS17
Becca McCharen-Tran, Chromat’s creative head honcho, always pushes pluralism to the max. At her SS17 presentation this afternoon, she deployed the most diverse set of alpha dolls ever: Lauren Wasser, an exquisite beauty who sports a prosthetic leg; Mela Murder, a kickass choreographer who is currently preggerz; and NYFW newbie, Iskra Lawrence, a pulchritudinous “plus-sizer” who is an indisputable paragon of beauty and vocal ‘body positivity’ advocate (you know her from her Aerie campaigns). Becca also dispatched three dynamite trans models — Carmen Carrera, Leyna Bloom, and Maya Monès — all of whom added to the high-spirited heterogeneity the Chromat crew dubbed “HYPERWAVE: Army of #ChromatBABES.” Becca, who celebrates radical diversity and loves to ‘subvert dominant paradigms’ through fashion, music and art, even teamed up with software developer Body Labs to digitally canvas and 3D-print Mela Murder’s choreography and clothes at the show IRT. Already one of NYC’s most front-line fashion brands, Chromat is becoming a commanding value proposition specializing in sexy, cerebral swimwear, tech-savvy athletic apparel and directional lingerie. The brand enlisted a few female Olympic champs, too, like Serena Williams, gold winner swimmer Simone Manuel, and flyboard warrior Gemma Weston to rep the wears. The standout looks were mesh and spandex bikinis, bangin’ bodysuits, titillating zip-up racer tanks and all those sexy straps. Chromat’s amazing after-party featured art and sound by PussyKrew, ShyBoi and Speakerfoxxx, all of whom celebrate and advocate radical diversity. Congrats, Chromat!
