69 Worldwide is the cult denim label waggishly weaving together clothing, art and eco-friendliness. The brand is about to unveil a new exhibition at MOCA Los Angeles this weekend starring Abigail Pickle, the founder’s hairless dog and cute as fuck mascot.
Since starting the LA-based label back in 2011, the anonymous maverick behind 69 Worldwide has been dedicated to embodying the ethics the fashion industry desperately needs. With its genderless, locally-produced garments that incorporate the principles of radical inclusion, sustainability, artisanship and social awareness, 69 Worldwide is fashion’s loftiest denim label (and way too cool for cheeseball LA!).
Famous for its oversized and hybridized garments fabricated almost entirely from denim – a fabric championed by the label for its utilitarian, durable, versatile and universally appealing qualities – 69’s steadfast commitment to frontline fashion and conscious clothing is now being recognized at one of LA’s coolest art venues.
“I do feel like the underdog in this industry,” explains the shadowy creative director. “It’s so validating to know that of all the people appreciating what we’re doing, an actual museum did.” The avant-garde exhibit, entitled Déjà Vu, will present 69’s utopian vision, immersing viewers into an alternate universe where the boundaries of identity dissolve, expectations are shattered, and humor is everything.
On display will be 30+ ensembles, selectively curated from the brand’s rollicking ranges over the last 7 years, which highlight 69’s consistent growth and commitment to values. Also featured is the label’s mascot, Abigail Pickle, who, according to the founder, actually helped curate the show: “I usually display selections before Abigail when in doubt,” said the big cheese.
