At Mar-a-Lago, The Donald welcomes Big Daddy Xi for a ‘very frank and friendly discussion’ while striking Syria with 59 ‘Tomahawk’ missiles. Go, President Trump!
America’s provocative president faces diplomatic test in summit with China’s fiercest authoritarian. And he just unleashed a salvo of missiles against targets in Syria.
President Trump’s summit tonight and tomorrow with China’s big cheese commie, Xi Jinping, is his most important powwow yet with another head of state. The Chinese bigwig and his perpetually dolled up songstress wife, Peng Liyuan, have arrived at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s personal Palm Beach estate, amid heightened tensions over bilateral trade (a yawning US deficit with China), geopolitical jitters (Mr. Trump just hit Syria’s Assad with a bang-up barrage of cruise missiles!) and how to squelch North Korea’s tyrannical rabble-rouser, Kim Jong-un. The POTUS threatened during the election campaign to tax imports from China by as much as 45% and to designate it a currency schemer (which is utterly false). On North Korea, Mr. Trump wants China, the Hermit Kingdom’s main benefactor, to exert more pressure in order to thwart its nuclear weapons program and to rein in the rogue ruler. Messrs Trump and Xi might be able to find common ground on North Korea, but on trade President Trump will have to backpedal on his promises or risk a trade war. He has also talked tough on China’s irredentist claims to Taiwan and doesn’t approve of China’s naval build up in the South China Sea. One thing the big guns won’t do is play golf together (considered a “corruption hazard” in China). However, with all these conflicting issue areas, Presidents Xi and Trump can come together on at least one thing if the meeting goes askew. Both believe the media should serve as a propaganda instrument for the administration, and anything that doesn’t is “fake news” or ‘zhen wei mo bian,’ as the Chinese say. Anyway, below are all the players and dealmakers at Mar-a-Lago (all dudes except for the First Ladies and Ivanka, of course ♥).
