Fashion Film – ‘We Margiela’
‘We, not me…Socialism with avant-garde characteristics.’
In six days from now Margiela addicts are in for a marvelous treat. Devotees of fashion’s most enigmatic brand, Maison Margiela, are about to get a fascinating glimpse into the super secretive house — and ultra-underground designer — courtesy of a new and highly anticipated film, ‘We Margiela.’
Thanks to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Holland (that’s where the label held its first museum exhibition two decades ago), the film will premiere in that very space, and from there propagate outward — very virally, we have no doubt.
The fashion flick — made by the Rotterdam-based Mint Film Office — explores the origins and evolution of Maison Margiela, with members of the collective opening up about the brand’s philosophical outlook and artistic methodologies.
Along with super-cool and ultra-rare archival footage, the recently deceased and influential co-founder, Jenny Meirens, was captured on camera for the first and only time (that we know of), offering avant-garde insights and sagely advice. A retinue of models, worker bees, creatives and other collaborators involved with the house from the ‘90s to the early aughts are also interviewed.
Maison Margiela is a unique brand in fashion. It relentlessly pursued a model of innovation as a convergence of like-minded creatives and stakeholders. Championing the ‘We’ as its governing principle, the originators behind the brand believed in a sort of socialist organizational structure — a Marxist enterprise of distributed co-creation, collective identity and artistic integrity.
But while it promises to tell the “untold and intimate story” of the house and its reclusive founder — from its inception in 1988 until 2009, when Margiela quietly departed — the eponymous visionary, Martin, is not expected to make any kind of appearance, opting instead to bask in his hard-earned anonymity.
Watch the trailer below. The doc premieres in full on October 22, 2017 at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in the Netherlands.
