Fashion Obsession – SHUSHU/TONG
‘Teamwork makes the dream work.’ Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang are the big guns behind Shanghai’s most sizzling brand.
Cutting their teeth at Gareth Pugh and Simone Rocha and snagging MAs from the London College of Fashion, design twosome Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang established their frontline label, SHUSHU/TONG, a few years back and have been kicking ass ever since. HQ’d in Shanghai, the label’s aesthetic integrates architectural elements with rebellious, youth-driven design, threading a thoughtful line between traditional craftsmanship and cosmopolitan, post-modern beauty. Flying high in Shanghai and gaining global momentum recently (the brand is stocked at Dover Street Market, Opening Ceremony, 10 Corso Como, Lane Crawford, SSENSE, etc.), the creators characterize their work as “girly but not too sweet with gnarly grunge sensibilities.”
“Our SS18 collection was inspired by a 80s fetish cult movie, Les fruits de la passion, directed by [avant-garde Japanese director] Shuji Terayama,” said the designers. “The story is about a girl who shows unconditional submissiveness to her boyfriend to prove her unlimited love. We created a sensual world and explored the adversarial relations between obedience and resistance.”
The SHUSHU/TONG girl sports dainty detailing (ruffles, bows, suspenders, voluminous skirts) but with a pretty, gritty twist (think dimly visible black lace that conceals and reveals at the same time combined with bondage-y leather pieces and decorative accessories).
