Memorial Day USA — OORAH!
‘Never has so much been owed…by so many…to so few.’
There is a particularly American tendency to romanticize and lionize valiant military service and sacrifice. At VIVISXN, that’s certainly cool by us. From the French-Indian War in the mid-18th century to the Global War on Terrorism in the 21st…to the CIA’s round-the-clock ‘clandestine service’ missions…to the Naval Special Warfare unit’s unremitting deployments, there is much to be grateful for – and countless people to canonize.
The United States won its independence by defeating the era’s predominant empire, settled the issue of slavery by fighting the Civil War, became a superpower by emerging victorious from World War II and the Cold War, and is in the process of bumping off militant Islam wherever it rears its diabolical head. Military campaigns have played a crucial role in defining the United States and its place in the world. America may not have won all its wars, but its military and FSOs have played a crucial role in defining today’s liberal world order that is, arguably, the ‘least gross’ global setup possible (just imagine if the Russians or Chinese were the preeminent powers — YUK!).
Anyway, for many, ‘Memorial Day’ means a day of hedonistic play, bikini-clad barbecues by the beach, beer guzzling, and gallivanting around town all weekend. But as we all know, the true meaning of Memorial Day is much more than just frolicking about or chasing tail. It’s a calling to honor those courageous men and women who have served and given their lives for the causes of freedom, liberty and peace. In aggregate, some 800,000+ American soldiers and intel personnel have died during conflicts at home and abroad.
Remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice is important. We give props to all our grunts and commandos grinding it out on the wire, and commemorate all the KIA/MIA troopers and operatives who have shuffled off this mortal coil in the selfless line of duty. Your battle cry is ours, too — OORAH!
