Jeremy Scott celebrates two decades of dope fashion and artistic independence
Fashion’s prince of pop showcased an eye-popping panorama derived of his entire oeuvre, with a little help from his bombshell bffs Devon, Karlie, Jourdan, Joan, Gigi and more.
For the last twenty years, Jeremy Scott has originated a candy-colored cosmos by being himself. In the process, he’s altered the landscape of avant-garde fashion, art, hybrid garments and bleeding-edge goodies. His ongoing collab with Adidas Originals, for example, ushered in a new epoch of luxury-sportswear, athleisure and crossover gear. His synergies with his pop star pals Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, CL and Madonna, etc. have pushed his technicolor vision to a brand new cohort of consumers from Kansas to South Korea. Since the late naughties, he has systematically surprised and shocked the fashion system, proving that his all-inclusive aesthetic philosophy is rock solid, totally outré and here to stay.
This week at Spring Studios in New York, the designer provided a rollicking retrospective on his wacky-cool work. “I used my whole history as my starting point, which was a little mind-boggling,” he told VIVISXN backstage. “I wanted to revisit the silhouettes and graphics that have come to define my clothes in a fun and fresh way.”
Devon Aoki opened the show in a bang-up, glittered-out motorbike jacket (one of Jeremy’s staple shapes), and later sported a sequin-spangled, multi-armhole dress festooned with cartoon patches. Those cartoons ostensibly referenced Ed Roth’s Rat Fink crew and Ahh! Real Monsters and continued throughout the range — splashed all over denim pieces and Jeremy’s signature intarsia sweaters. He also did riffs on football padding and army gear with cool, crossover corsets worn by sexpot Coco Rocha. We loved the deconstructed sweats, the nerve-jangling neon palette, the scabrous looney toon ensembles and the makeup/under-eye embellishments. The disco-ball bodysuit was especially bangin’, as well as the over-the-knee boots and the amazing disco Docs!
Devon and Coco were joined on the runway by Jourdan Dunn, Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls, Stella Maxwell, Liberty Ross, and our all-time fave Charlotte Free. New-gen faces Slick Woods and Sofia Richie came out as well. “When I was looking at the 20 years, I couldn’t imagine anybody opening the show but Devon,” said Jeremy. “There’s different girls from different time periods who have been emblematic in my collections. Girls I launched, girls who started with me. It’s so nice to have all these different generations of Jeremy girls!”
