Rabble-rouser Karen Fiorito makes politically-charged, subversive art. She has taken a knuckle-duster to The Donald
Karen Fiorito is the LA-based artist causing quite a kerfuffle for the ballsy billboard she made in Phoenix depicting Donald Trump as an Orwellian overlord.
Looking all ϟϟ-esque complete with mushroom clouds and dollar signs, Karen Fiorito has made a rather inflammatory (and epic) depiction of The Donald on an ad board in Arizona. As a result a few locals there (and elsewhere) went loco and now the art-agitator says that she and her husband are receiving death threats from people who are ‘deeply offended.’ The massive blood red billboard, which was commissioned by the art advocacy group Limited Liability Corporation, portrays the POTUS donning a Russian flag pin, flanked by thermonuclear mushroom-clouds, Orwellian iconography and subliminal clowns. Karen said she knew the piece would be controversial but felt compelled to do it anyway, arguing that “a lot of people are feeling this way and I’m just trying to express what I think is on a lot of people’s minds these days…Billboards are perfect, because you don’t have to go to a gallery to see it,” she said. “You’re creating a dialogue with the public. You’re reaching people you’d never reach with your artwork.”
“I’ve been called a communist and a Satan worshiper,” she said. “I’ve been told I’m a ‘very, very sick person.’ I’m not sure what that means. I haven’t been answering the phone. My husband has because he’s not afraid to talk to anyone, but he told me he received a couple death threats this morning. He said, ‘They were coming to get us with their boys.’”
Of course Karen was the same sassy artist behind a similar billboard depicting ex-President George W. Bush and his neo-con ilk (below)…you know, because “there’s no such thing as a legitimate Republican President.”
Ironically, while Karen is extremely concerned about the emergence of a ‘Trump dictatorship’, she didn’t seem so concerned when President Obama legislated from the Oval Office via an indulgent gush of executive orders, many of which constitutional lawyers felt, at a bare minimum, pushed the limits of the presidential powers afforded to him. Anyway, at VIVISXN we love insane art, and respect the First Amendment no matter how inane or tacky. The billboard space is owned by Beatrice Moore, who told 12 News that the work will stay up as long as Trump is in power. Peep the vid below. Hurrah.
