Fierce Film – ‘REPLICAS’
Teasing a Flatliners-esque thriller or a Ray Kurzweil prophecy, Keanu Reeves’ latest sci-fi film, ‘Replicas’, looks too good!
Keanu Reeves plays Will Foster, a brazen neurobiologist who clones dead people, including his own family members after they died in a tragic car accident. He works on bleeding-edge brain research that makes it theoretically possible to transfer a person’s memory into a synthetic medium. It is a revolutionary idea – the notion that we will one day be able to upload human consciousness into a functional humanoid shell – ensuring digital immortality.
Talk about total recall. Alzheimer’s disease and dementia would be cured and we could download our minds (and ourselves) into a Matrix-like, ‘brain-net’ cloud continuum. Humans would become truly ‘transhuman’ or even omniscient, achieving the ‘mind of God.’ But the film presents a few paradoxes and moral dilemmas as well, like who or what could tamper with your ‘data’ and would it be possible to insert ‘false consciousness’ onto the servers? What about all the bugs, glitches and hackers? And would more advanced ‘replicas’ have the power to extinguish or delete others? Phew.
Anyway, the film was scheduled to get released on August 24. It’s a month late, dammit. Directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff and written by Chad St. John (and co-starring Alice Eve, Thomas Middleditch and John Ortiz), ‘Replicas’ looks epic! Check out the newest trailer, which dropped yesterday…and listen to our boy and farsighted futurist Ray Kurzweil talk about similar themes like the coming Singularity, ‘neuralinks’ (Elon Musk), and how to create a mind here.
