John Galliano showcased ludicrously lush sleeping bags, swaddles of soothing sorbet tones, wacky bubble wrap wraparounds, selfie-sticks attached to shins/ankles, foamed skirts and techno-embellished thing-a-ma-jams. Waaa! He also published a jabberwocky of a podcast series in which he elucidates the meaning and mysteries underpinning his surreal streetwear-inspired stuff: “Streetwear will always inspire for sure…But sometimes, as I said, I’m a dressmaker. It’s about technique. It’s about cutting. It’s about draping. And it’s through that process that possibly one can produce volume.” Um, what?!
He prattles on: “Volume makes fashion move forward…it’s a real workout in the atelier,” he says. “The idea of proposing a new glamour. None of us are interested in actually finding a new glamour — it’s the idea that’s exciting.”
In addition to his stream of consciousness podcast series, Galliano featured teched-out ‘shin snatchers’ (above) which clinched smartphones and impressively livestreamed close-ups of the footwear, sleeves, the headpieces, etc. — highlighting the miniscule properties that make couture such a cool, detail-intense craft. “We’re attached to our iPhones, everything on our iPads,” he says in his sociologically-tinged talk. “We are nomadic. We move around in tribes.”
Anyway, we love the hybrid collision of haute couture and high tech gadgetry, especially the X-ray print photograph of photograph gear, the pretty palette of ‘techno sorbets’, tops-cum-TV screens and VR goggles. John Galliano might talk a lot of gobbledygook online (“the raw, raw, undiluted essence, the parfum”) but he’s a true ‘neo-digital native’ making nail-biting fashion and clever deconstructed couture. Go go gadget Galliano x Margiela! Check it…
