Dark Romance and Neo-Gothic Inspirations
Considering the topsy-turvy times we’re living in and the rather jittery geo-political conditions that have come to characterize our world, it’s no wonder that there’s been a fashionable fixation on dark grunge, film noir, apocalyptic themes and all things neo-gothic. Crossing a love of horror and bondage with subcultural streaks of skate, punk, and tech, designers and artists are infusing their works with somber and surreal overtones, a sense of impending doom and a fetish for darkness and dystopianism. As an aesthetic movement taking its cues from the gothic horror romance of the Victorian period, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, creatives like Fecal Matter (a kickass fashion brand), Die Antwoord, David Lynch, Marilyn Manson, Bjork, Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh, etc. are updating their takes on macabre tropes and neo-gothic infatuations.
