Werner Herzog’s New Doc — ‘Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World’ is Amazing
The legendary filmmaker marvels at the internet.
Werner Herzog’s new doc — ‘Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World’ — contemplates our insane digital commons and the wonders and weirdness of the worldwide web. The film explores the ways our hyper-connected lives have been rewired for the digital age: how the interwebs and social media are shaping our personal relationships, professional lives and sense of identity; the implications of big data and cyber security in our networked existence; the coming singularity and transhumanism; reverse-engineering human intelligence and injecting nanobots into our bodies and brains; and the hazards of gaming, virtual reality and machine learning. Herzog has a special fetish for deep learning, cybernetics and hybrid consciousness, and takes up those topics in depth with digital doyens and nerdy gnomes like Elon Musk, Leonard Kleinrock, Lawrence Krauss, Danny Hillis, etc. in fascinating Q&A formats. ‘Lo and Behold’ has moments of epiphany and erudition, but skimps on subjects like internet porn and cyber warfare — topics we’re obsessed with at VIVISXN (obvs). Overall this doc is dope and teems with infectious, teched out wonder and freaky-cool futurism. Peep the teaser below.
