Radio Kangol made a short vid about Veronicka Vasicka’s Minimal Wave label, a music vehicle that has (for over 10 solid years) crackled with underground sound, indie vibes and ample DIY vim. Founded back in 2005, Minimal Wave’s mission has been to probe and propagate the rather microscopic but momentous ‘minimal synth’ genre. Born out of the post-punk 70s and 80s, this music scene and subculture pushed a hacked and hybridized version of pop with a heavy DIY mindset. Bootstrapping cheap music machines — shoddy synthesizers and mongrel sound methods — the scene’s musicians engendered what Vasicka calls “electronic pop gems from the underground a revolutionary take on pop music.” Enter Radio Kangol, an internet radio station and media platform that reps the avant-garde online and sheds light on the evolution of the genre in this new short. There’s a mixtape of Minimal Wave tracks, original sources, verve-y vinyl numbers and rare archived sounds of techno-punk, niche noise, etc. that will pummel your synapses and pique your rhythmic senses.
