“All We Want Is Respect” – NYC’s Strippers Are Going On Strike
There is a zero-sum mentality in NYC’s erotic night clubs. Go figure.
NYC hedge fund traders and private equity playboys had better find a new way to spend Thursday evenings — at least for the time being — because the city’s strippers are going on strike. Ugh.
The source of the contention is a simmering dispute between New York City dancers and a growing cohort of Instagram-famous “startenders” who wear outfits that are almost as sexy as the strippers’ gear, but also promote the venue on social media and via novel marketing approaches — bringing in droves of horny hedge funders and celebrity clients — while also serving drinks and stimulating convo.
The club proprietors, not wanting to lose the revenue and profits that the girls are bringing in, have stood idly by while non-dancers (bartenders, bottle girls and hostesses) have grown their client base (and tips) at the expense of the strippers, who typically pay clubs a house fee to perform, and are facing wage deflation and shrinking nightly fees. Evidently, there is racism and discrimination to blame, too.
The result? One stripper who spoke out said she used to make $1,000 a night. But now she’s pulling in closer to $400. “No dancer in New York City is making $1,000 a night anymore.”
Of course, the strike is still in its embryonic phase. But according to credible players, it’s quickly gaining momentum. VIVISXN really hopes this issue can be resolved asap. Read more about it here.
