The Bass, Miami – Paola Pivi
Paola Pivi delivers a digital jumble, Darwinian jungle and multimedia junkyard jam-packed with real news, fake news, simulations, delusions, spoofs, confabulations, imitations and illusions. Mind = blown.
VIVISXN naively happened upon Paola Pivi‘s perky installation at The Bass, simply titled, ‘Lies,’ on the second floor. Viewers step into an elevated cube jazzed up with hi-def video screens, bright lights, amplification, proliferation, multiplication and audio-visual razzmatazz. It reminded us of Vincenzo Natali’s amazing sci-fi horror film, The Cube, in which the space is rigged with various traps designed to make your brain go coo-coo or just nix you on the spot.
This walk-in, immersive manifesto is a fucked up scrambled data set, teetering tesseract and informational wormhole where modernism, mythos, manipulation and conflicting ideologies collide into one another. There’s real/fake news, misinformation, disinformation, counterfeits, impostors, conspiracies and fakery all wrapped into one hardcore hexahedron; everything is in your face.
Voices can be heard saying things like “climate change is a hoax” and “all political refugees are free.” Complete hogwash but intriguing nonetheless – sort of like RT, CNN or the BBC opining/reporting on the issues of the day. Essentially, this is a junkyard of globalization and a supermarket of propaganda; a digital temple of world martyrs, ‘news zombies’, Goya‘s ‘Disasters of War‘ and Warhol‘s cheeky maxim ‘everything you need to know is on the surface.’
We fucking love it! It conjures Kasimir Malevich, who painted Suprematist amazingness and talked about “the beauty of speed” and “the zero of form.” It evokes Naum Gabo, who asserted “the active is beautiful; quality is garbage,” and Robert Smithson, who wrote, “The rat of politics always gnaws at the cheese of art.” Hmmm. The installation even reminds us of mixed-media mastermind Nam June Paik‘s epic work (below – ‘TV Garden’, 1974) comprised of countless TV sets examining America’s manic media gestalt. We could go on and on…
Paola Pivi was merely trying to make the point that the news cycle is undifferentiated chaos and a continuum of culture from which there is no escape. It poses a few very paranoid (but relevant) questions: have the media, government, technology, and history duped us? Have fake and real become indistinguishable? Were we ever unencumbered of disinformation, or is deception hardwired into the human experience? Are we being manipulated right now, or worse yet, are we deceiving ourselves? Hmmm. Get to The Bass fast!… There are also some super surreal, totally ginormous neon polar bears enveloped in ethereal feathers. Wow!
