‘This is about Whiteness!’ Welcome to UC-Berkeley
Student rabble-rousers at the University of California-Berkeley amassed in front of a campus bridge yesterday and forcibly prevented their ‘caucasian’ classmates and professors from crossing it. ‘People of color’ were allowed to pass; white people were prohibited. The humongous human wall was designed as a ‘pro-safe space’ protest. Agitators demanded that the university’s bigwigs designate additional ‘safe spaces’ for trans students, gay students, students of color and people of ‘non-white’ ethnic backgrounds. They were evidently enraged that one of their official safe space’s had been moved from the fifth floor of a campus building to the basement. In the vid (below), activists blocked off the bridge completely, choking off foot traffic. Students and faculty who needed to get to class had no choice but to cross by scaling the bridge or jumping from rock to rock. A few people tried to force their way through and were violently rebuffed. Protesters shouted “Go around! Go around!” at a white guy on a bicycle. One of the passersby was told, “This is bigger than you,” by a protester. “This is about whiteness.” These students consider themselves ‘progressives‘, but what’s ‘progressive’ about punishing and coercing people — making it more difficult for them to get to class — because they were born with the wrong skin color? WTF, UC–Berkeley?! The hippie dissenters are redonkulous for demanding formally sanctioned ‘safe spaces’ for people who identify as ‘non-white’; that’s tantamount to segregation/racism — separate ‘safe spaces’ for trans, queer and racially ‘non-white’ peops. Berkeley’s public areas — its quads, common rooms, parks, student union, libraries, classrooms, and yes, bridges — should be safe, welcoming spaces for ALL students. Duh.
