Did Steve Bannon basically destroy Harvey Weinstein?
Random thoughts on Harvey Wein-stain, warped power structures and other Hollywood weirdos.
The biggest open-secret in Hollywood was that Harvey Weinstein was a world-class perv. And his ‘coming out party’ this week is incredibly intriguing, totally appaling and very viral. Tinseltown is a dirty place. It’s Chinatown, squared. No, it’s Jalalabad on a sweltering hot day. It’s gross.
And, at this point it’s what we don’t know that is more interesting than what we’ve heard so far. But, staying focused on Harvey Gropestein, Producer at Large, his position has been to act as one of the critical cogs in a machine that perpetuates a grotesque, predator-prey culture. Lucia Evans, Asia Argento, Rose McGowan and more have all leveled accusations of non-consensual sex with the beast, and McGowan even accepted a $100,000 settlement back in 1997 to stay mum about the incident (so did seven other women).
From the casting couches of Hollywood to the hedge funds on Wall Street to the dorky think tanks in D.C., this story won’t have all the twists and turns of Pulp Fiction or The Forbidden Kingdom, but it will have the same implications. Weinstein, in effect, was perfectly suited for his role. He is a man of infinite appetites with abysmal impulse control. A hedonistic, Viagra-addled hornball with power over sexy, young she-devils desperate for fame.
And these women, of their own volition, made the trade happen. “Small price to pay, right?” Wrong. There’s a political dimension to the double-dealing and skullduggery: look at the women most opposed to Trump, the Ashley Judds, the Gwynneth Paltrows, etc. They were all used by Weinstein or someone like him. Droves will come out of the woodwork in due time. Ben Affleck is next because he couldn’t handle fame and power any better than the rest of them did. He’s also The Batman (now dubbed The ‘Buttman‘) and Disney will not pass up the opportunity to undermine Warner Bros.
The story is perverted by the desperate need of the cultural and political elite to maintain their ‘power structure’ at all costs. Weinstein’s film companies acted like money laundering operations for the DNC. How many millions did he raise for people like Obama, Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein? Bucketloads. How many millions were added to the budgets of performers’ salaries to be funneled from Wall Street financiers to those same people? Oodles.
The whole thing is a nasty, wretched nexus — a sketchy, internecine nightmare of quid pro quo hustlers and salacious dirt merchants. And Steve Bannon just tossed a grenade into it all. In real time.
Yep, you heard it. Steve Bannon is the Dr. Evil in this rapidly evolving drama. He’s the mastermind behind this week’s slushy theater. Except that Bannon isn’t the villain (well, to Harvey Weinstein he is) but the protagonist. Think about it for for hot sec.
Who else has the incentive, means, opportunity and, most importantly, the will to take on the biggest, most powerful (and pathetic) people in the world. And he doesn’t want cash. Bannon’s already minted. Remember, as Bannon left the White House he said that there he had influence, but at Breitbart he has power. We’re seeing the first effects of Bannon on the outside. And what’s the motive? Bannon, for whatever his faults are, is a patriot. He’s a disciple of Andrew Breitbart who routinely castigated Hollywood to ‘stop raping the children.’ Bannon joined Trump’s campaign and turned the messaging into a pale reflection of his film, “Generation Zero” (it’s worth watching!).
Bannon understands the cultural and generational imperatives of America right now. If you haven’t watched that film then you don’t know what Steve Bannon is all about. Resources? The man runs Breitbart. Opportunity? Bannon made millions as a producer on Seinfeld. He worked at Goldman Sachs. He worked in Hollywood for years. Bannon also saw the inner-workings of Washington while working for Trump.
On the outside he would be Trump’s secret agent, using his insider knowledge and strategic acumen (cue Chuck Norris in The Delta Force) from the Underworld of Washington to install sump pumps in the swamp.
Spending time in DC changes everyone. It corrupts the venal and galvanizes the principled. Bannon didn’t want to cut deals to govern. He wasn’t interested in sharing power with Trump, he was interested in exposing the sinister status quo. He runs Breitbart — now one of the most powerful news portals on the planet.
What’s the evidence that Bannon was behind this? The headlines today are all about how he did some business with Weinstein over a decade ago. A minor company that Bannon ran into the ground. It went bankrupt. Simple guilt by ironic association.
Here’s a better question? Who hasn’t worked with Weinstein in Hollywood? This story is simply chum to feed to the loony left’s Facebook and Insta feeds. It will alienate and expose even more weirdos than we can imagine. The left crowed when they thought they’d chased Bannon from the White House. They thought they had Trump cornered and without friends. But, Bannon’s leaving the White House wasn’t the end of the movie, it was, simply the end of a smaller arc.
The Weinstein Turn
In screenwriting, there is something called the “Mid-Point Turn.” It is the moment when someone does something so singular, usually bad, that it ensures things can never go back to the way they were at the beginning. The fall of Harvey Weinstein is the ‘Mid-Point Turn’ for this part of the story. The lid has been lifted on Hollywood’s subterfuge and shenanigans. Someone’s finally going down for their transgressions. The guy behind the outing is still in power and the dominoes will continue to fall.
Trump made the correct (political) calculation to stick it to the NFL like he did. It galvanized his base. It exposed the hypocrisy of a sport played by faux revolutionaries and financed by taxpayers. They think they can just stop taking a knee for a few weeks and all will be forgiven.
Not this time. Ditto for the PRs, the image handlers and the ‘dream machine’ in Hollywood. They think that isolating Weinstein in Arizona, circulating apologetic press releases, and selling off his tarnished production studio will make this thing go away. Harvey Weinstein will probably go to jail (the NYPD and Scotland Yard just opened [sex crime] investigations into the matter). He is perceived as a sex offender — and the evidence is looking more solid by the hour. He’ll probably end up rooming with Anthony Weiner, aka Carlos Danger. And just a few hours ago the second richest guy on earth, Jeff Bezos, got sucked into the scandalous swirling vortex courtesy of Rose McGowan.
But the real story is how much this disrupts the back channels and money laundering conduits of the entertainment industry to maintain control over the narrative. Trump’s base already didn’t like Hollywood. Now they hate it. George Clooney will probably be next.
