X Japan – ‘We Are X’

Formed in 1982, X Japan took the optical oomph of 80s metal to the next level, creating a hyper-momentous music and cultural movement in Japan called “visual kei.” They have sold more than 30 million albums, singles, and oodles of merch. “If those guys were either born in America or England and sang in English, they might be the biggest band in the world,” argues KISS’s Gene Simmons. In this amazing new doc, titled We Are X, you see first-hand footage of the band in all its glory and gore, angst and awesomeness. Directed by Stephen Kijak (who did the ‘Stones in Exile’), the film follows the band and their insanely famous frontman, Yoshiki, on a jittery journey about music, friendship, fans, fanaticism and the human condition. Wow.
