Yang Li – SS19
Fusing feral fashion with magical multimedia, Yang Li stretched the diverse strands of digital, analogue, post-punk and outsider aesthetics.
Yang Li’s fashion evinces an artist adept at creating mixed-media spaces, gorgeous hallucinatory places, and youthful subversion. Since launching his eponymous label back in 2010, Yang has channeled his passion for fabricating clothing in cunning and creative ways. For SS19, his aesthetic intoxicated us. The Aussie-Chinese designer, based in London town, explored the convergence of fashion and photography in a hypnotic tour de force, showcasing his nervy sartorial codes and graphical modernist modes via video art (think Nam June Paik), severe-looking muses and ethereal vibes. Described by Yang as ‘melancholic optimism’, the range depicted our obsessive, narcissistic and dualistic relationship with social media and technology – an examination of our immersive, reflexive and real vs. virtual selves.
We are gaga for his dope denim gilets (sleeveless jackets) enveloped in green organza with inventive zippers, hybridized trim and spiked-out creepers. Yang’s knee-high leather socks, see-through organza frocks, elongated opera gloves, lambskin dresses, and streamlined styles are sick. His mystic, cryptic confections and dreamy auras combine dissent, depth, beauty, style, and a prowling/punk instinct. We love Yang Li for his untamed contrarian spirit and rogue staples…
