Museumgoers will be glad to know the new MoMA is woke as hell.
In accordance with the new rules of Wokesterism, the new MoMA is all-inclusive and immensely multicultural, of course, signalling its racial uprightness and sensitivity to gender, diversity and pluralist values.
Its doors have been sealed all summer but tomorrow New York’s Museum of Modern Art will re-launch after an elaborate face-lift costing $450 million. A huge enlargement of viewing space is matched by a radical curatorial overhaul with an emphasis on race, gender and socio-economic predicaments.
The content will rotate on a half-yearly basis but will retain its “radicalism, experimental opus and avant-garde allure.” ‘Whiteness’ and ‘toxic masculinity’ will be purged along with ‘old-school hegemony’ and ‘outmoded hierarchies’ — what Jerry Saltz calls “the cult of the male artist and the competitive aesthetic messianism.” The museum will present “people less well known, less than a century old, less white, less male, and less exclusively American and European.” A good thing, of course. Hmmmm…(?)
The exhibits will be showcased as a mash-up rather than as organized motifs and chronological narratives. “Quarantania, I” (1947–53), a sculpture by Louise Bourgeois where tapestry tools huddle like gossiping friends, now stands between Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907), a celebrated painting of five Catalan hookers, and “American People Series #20: Die” (1967), a nightmarish depiction of a race riot by Faith Ringgold, an 89-year-old African-American artist from Harlem. “We have expanded who’s represented in the collection,” Glenn Lowry, the museum’s head honcho, told VIVISXN at the preview.
The new MoMA is focusing “on women as much as we have focused on men; on collectives as much as on individuals; on artists working in different geographies as much as those in Europe and North America,” said the directors. Thank goodness! America will now be aesthetically safe from racism, sexism, Hispanophobia and the shackles of Cis-White Privilege oppression. The new MoMA is now a bastion of the ‘#Artistic Resistance.’ Enjoy.
