Art Start – Art During The Viral Spiral
The art industry contains countless remarkable artists dying to get out. Creatives all over the globe are beginning to break the psychic ice formed by the China-seeded contagion, piss poor governance (YOU FUCKING SUCK ASS, Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio!) and moneyed up collectors looking for new assets and investments.
With museums and galleries starting to cautiously reopen (finally!), we’ve done a cursory survey of some upcoming spectacles that will certainly arouse your senses as the fall art crawl slowly resumes, despite the lingering pandemic (thanks, China!).
From Katherine Bernhardt’s neon-colored images of cigarettes and Xanax (Canada Gallery) and the ‘100 Drawings From Now’ exhibit (The Drawing Center) to The Hole’s highly anticipated ‘CUBED’ group show, there’s a gush of giddy-up art out there that was made during the worldwide Wuhan Virus crisis or refreshed for its lascivious and lovely notoriety (we💕 Betty Tompkins! – PPOW – below).
Many of these works provide an existential window on the ways the quarantine forced artists to adapt to conditions and sublimate all that pent-up rage/creativity, despite being holed up for seven straight months in various states of semi-solipsism and stressssssssssssssss.
Spanning surreal photography, abstract painting, multimedia, graffiti and more, this art lets you see how ultra-conscious tapping into the subconscious is. Clever, cool and ragingly creative, they are personal and universalizing representations of humankind under some kind of duress — a sort of psychological black box that depicts the language of trauma and transformation.
Anyway, artists and gallerists are starting to come out of their caves. Check out the stuff our art antennas are tuning into. Recommended venues with killer art propositions are → The HOLE, Miles McEnery Gallery, Nohra Haime Gallery, Pop International Gallery, Hales Gallery, Michael Werner Gallery, etc. (they all reopen on September 10!).
