Artist Eric Yahnker – The Hole, NYC
‘Factory Reset’ is the tongue-in-cheek tour de force depicting current affairs, pop culture, Trumpism and tomfoolery.
The Hole is, hands down, the best fu*#ing venue for viewing art in NYC! And Eric Yahnker’s newest oeuvre – currently bristling with magic and madness smack-dab on the Bowery – is electric, psychedelic, vibrating and full of verve. Eric conjures current events, repressed memories, outre associations, nostalgia, neurosis, legend, myth and mayhem in his super-cool, conceptually incongruous visual elixirs.
Sometimes tough and tricky to decipher (like, wtf is perv Eliot Spitzer doing as paint-slinger Jackson Pollack in a sort of populist/basket of deplorables delineation below?…Or is that a defamed Kevin Spacey drip-splashing chaos across the canvas? We have no clue!) and sometimes just amazingly surreal, his art sizzles with electromagnetic visual discharge and multidimensional moxie. ‘Factory Reset’ depicts gut-busting graphical pizzazz and metaphysical political phantoms, and provides a near panoramic platform for exploring the era of Trumpism in all tics, tocks and ideological tumult.
This artistic smorgasbord of signifiers, optical oracles and socio-political irony creates psychic ruptures and comical razzmatazz unlike anything else we’ve seen in a while. The best bits include a hallucinogenic melding of Mark Zuckerberg with Donald Trump sporting an unkempt shock/toupee of blonde hair, the Gipper giddying up on a Jeff Koons Balloon Dog and a pretty, pensive Ivanka Trump imbibing Fyodor Dostoevsky’s mental anguish and moral dilemmas via Cliffs Notes. In the very back you can witness a mural/installation of the kooky-corrupt Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford (below) as an American drama queen and con artist extraordinaire. And we love the image of Stephen Hawking staring at the Marcel Duchamp-inspired bicycle wire wheel contemplating the multiverse in all its quantum, cosmological, readymade manifestations and ‘many-world‘ interpretations. The Warholian references are rife, too, with images of Andy engaging in his usual narcissism, self-aggrandizement and taking snaps with an iPhone.
We love this exhibit! THANK YOU, Eric Yahnker and Kathy Grayson!
Go feast your eyes on ‘Factory Reset’ now at The Hole and reboot your reticular formation. The show is on until December 23rd.
