‘Shifted Sims’ is a rich smorgasbord of CGI avatars, 3D relief sculptures and incredible impasto gestures that will jolt your senses and spark your inner fire. Spliced together and carefully engineered, the eye-popping images form a socially networked tableau filled with selfie-obsessed vamps, rasterized misfits, distorted identities, bitmapped mutants, Wuhan Virus caricatures, Baby Yoda and psycho-visual craziness played out at amphetamine speed.
Pieter delineates the often oppressive, excessive infrastructure of the digital world — the passive-aggressive interactions of online culture and alienated life during the great 2020 quarantine (thanks, China !☹️😷 → fuckers!). The exhibit is one of the coolest presentations we’ve seen since NYC’s galleries re-opened last week — a next-level synergy between technique, subject, thought and material.
‘Shifted Sims’ opens up alternate dimensions and nails the notion of ‘simulation life’ via wild style gestures, social media, memes, pastiche, computer graphics, collective psychosis, Zoom calls, painterly flair and viral hysteria. It obviously borrows heavily from The Sims 4 — the life simulation game that gives you the power to create and control people.
The press release states this: “The hidden cost of 21st-century convenience is that you are stalked by a muzzy dread, a feeling that everything you do inflicts some distant unseen harm. The extraordinary events of 2020 sharpen focus on the disastrous consequences of this estrangement…Pieter’s paintings of avatars counter these riptides of isolation, approximating a shared affective experience of the present moment: the monumental, and the berserk.”
