Nigel Cooke at Jerwood Gallery
The multidisciplinary maestro challenges his own odyssey by mashing-up music, meteorology, the apocalypse and memories of growing up by the sea.
Born and bred in Manchester, England, Nigel Cooke has been cooking up some berserk-cool compositions since the naughties. Lucky for fans like us, ‘Painter’s Beach Club: Telescope’ just opened at Jerwood Gallery in Hastings (East Sussex) serving up some of Nigel’s most psychotropic works.
This exhibit features previously unseen, utterly enthralling paintings of hallucinogenic vistas, phantom-esque characters, paranormal phenomena and painterly dark energy that will strike you like a lightning bolt. Exploring unknown reaches of the imagination via intense brushstrokes, beaches, waterways and the bays of Britain’s seaside, Nigel’s figurations and representations are always in dynamic motion, depicting dystopian dreams and eerie flashes of our kooky cultural-biomass.
The colossal compositions are deeply conflicted and kinetic, probing the secret pathways and the psychic nooks and crannies that make consciousness so mysterious. The art integrates – often subliminally or surreptitiously – graffiti-esque zings, hidden slogans, fractal-like structures and dark cyclotrons of the soul. There is existential oscillation everywhere; Nigel’s technique is epic with an intrinsic velocity, heart-pounding verve and burly swirling scale!
The fierce and phantasmagoric compositions represent the liberated memories of the artist’s early life mixed with homage to his artistic heroes such as Francis Bacon, Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya. We’re f^*king infatuated with Nigel Cooke’s art! Go to JERWOOD GALLERY now! The show is on until March 23, 2019.
