Bean Spiller Edward Snowden
Extraditing Edward Snowden?
Russians are enraged at cyber rascal Edward Snowden, who skedaddled to Moscow to dodge prosecution by U.S. authorities, for spilling the beans that the Ruskies might be behind those recent NSA hacks. In a series of tweets, Snowden referred to a breach of the National Security Agency’s malware server and attributed it to Moscow’s cyber spooks at the FSB. It was carried out by a crafty crew calling itself the Shadow Brokers, which purloined and published snippets of source code from zero-day programs ostensibly authored by the NSA. Breaking down the breech, Snowden said such a hack was not unprecedented, but the publication of it was. “Why did they do it? No one knows, but I suspect this is more diplomacy than intelligence, related to the escalation around the DNC hack,” he tweeted. Anyway, the apparatchiks are rankled by the whole affair and rumors are swirling that the spy boy has outstayed is welcome. His veiled remarks prompted plenty of peeved Russians to respond via Twitter, Facebook and Russia’s it-est social network Vkontakte, to insist he be punished and booted out for dissing the very country that has provided him a global soap box and safe haven for his yakkety yak.
Snowden has been in Russia for three years now and was just granted a new residency permit. He has made several appearances at conferences and in the media through virtual means, and typically earns more than $12,000 in blabbing fees. We think he’s a chump (i.e. a traitor) because he stole highly classified intel docs, tipped off the bad guys, endangered national security and basically violated the Espionage Act. He should have simply brought his concerns up the chain of command internally instead of dumping his docs in the public domain. Extradition is cool with us.
“Someone will soon be sent home,” Anatoly Mukin wrote on Vkontakte in response to Snowden’s stream of tweets. Another commented: “It’s time to send this guest back home.”
@mkomsomolets Снежку стало скучно и он решил сыграть со СМИ в злую игру? Такие шутки ему могут обернуться холодной камерой на острове США.
Translation:“Snowden is getting bored so he decided to play an angry game with the media? This type of joke will have him end up in a cold chamber on a U.S island.”
