Björk’s pioneering VR exhibit kicks off in London Town

Ethereal Avatar: Björk Digital

Today the intrepid Icelandic artist launched the London leg of her Virtual Reality (VR) experiment, Björk DigitalThe exhibition is a mashup of performance art, film, VR, Augmented Reality (AR), interactive display and music. Björk, always inventive and techno-adroit, streamed in from Iceland to initiate the exhibition, using motion-capture technology that replicated her movements in real life. Posting on social media, she argued that technology enables her to neutralize the gender politics of art and music. “I am very happy w(ith) being the pop musician I am and feel VR is a natural continuity of the pop video…Technology is enabling women to work outside the already formed hierarchical systems. The laptop arriving (in) 1999 gave me a personal studio to make Vespertine, the touchscreen (in) 2006 helped me map my own idiosyncratic musicology outside the classical canon and reconnect it w(ith) nature and make Biophilia, VR is helping making a new stage free of politics where sound and vision is swirling free in 360 fully liberated.”
