CELINE – New York, New Store
Hedi Slimane, Celine’s visionary helmsman, will hoist the flag upon the house’s newest NYC store this Monday. Queue up now!
Ever since Hedi took over creative direction at Celine in January 2018, it’s all been a whirlwind of change for the iconic French label. Today’s exciting news, that Celine will execute a major global roll-out starting with a flagship (‘concept’) store in NYC, is no exception.
The store, which will open February 25th (this coming Monday!) on Mad Ave in Manhattan, is the first space fully designed by Hedi, and will fuse his inimitable graphic style with specially commissioned objet d’art, novelty works and next-level fashion, of course. Badass British artist James Balmforth was commissioned to make a giant cubed sculpture (below) for the space, along with sprawling installations from Mexican artist Jose Dávila.
The new 5,000 square foot interior took nine months to build-out and will replace the old store on the same block. It will feature women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories and bespoke goodies amidst an invincible brutalist aesthetic with black and white marble, hard-edged Euclidean accents, wooden trim, white-painted steel beams and a slick mishmash of modernist/organic elements.
“Celine has a great distribution network and high-quality visibility but no large stores,” said Celine CEO Severine Merle. “We need to open flagships in major cities, larger stores that can accommodate menswear and newly expanded women’s collections.”
Celine will also embark on bolstering its brand proposition and expanding its assortment via new retail channels in LA, London, Milan, Shanghai and Beijing in the coming months. Canadian artist Elaine Cameron-Weir will showcase work in Celine’s Tokyo store, and American artist Oscar Tuazon will present a piece in the Paris location, which will feature select edits and carefully curated merch. Another space in Paris will be dedicated solely to menswear, a new direction spearheaded by Hedi.
“We have openings planned all over the world,” Severine Merle explained. “Flagships and larger boutiques will offer men’s and women’s together, but some stores will also present just men’s or women’s. The Paris network will expand in March, notably with the first menswear flagship on the Rue François 1er, a historically Celine location. The Avenue Montaigne store will remain dedicated to womenswear. There will be menswear boutiques in all the major capitals.”
