Art Smart – Franciszka Themerson
From surreal sketches and stage set-ups to cryptic-quirky abstractions and all-out weirdness, Franciszka Themerson’s canvases are mega cool, inspiring and infinitely insane!
The experimental husband-wife art duo from Poland (later moving to Britain) — Franciszka and Stefan Themerson — famous for co-founding the first avant-garde publishers in the UK, Gaberbocchus Press, made totally weird, wacky and WAY COOL art back in the day. Their stuff contains streams of consciousness and seas of consciousness: surfaces are in constant flux and enriched with zany juvenile zest, cheeky biomorphic blobs and high-spirited scribbles. Muppets, puppets and cute mutants make for romper-room cheerfulness and jolly storyboarding.
Recognized since the 1950s for their kooky doodles and syrupy compositions, they amalgamated painting, illustration, design, writing, poetry, adolescent energy, and all sorts of hybrid madness. According to biographer/cartoonist Nick Wadley, “the couple celebrated the destruction of boundaries between things and worked with a freedom from art’s -isms.” Their prolific output is mesmerizing, mysterious, ABSURD, fun and profound. Check out a few of their conceptual kickers below and explore Franciszka and Stefan‘s sassy stuff here. Bang!
