Maison Margiela – SS19
Maison Margiela‘s John Galliano joined forces with Sasha Lane, Molly Blair, Princess Nokia, Willow Smith, etc. to trumpet the brand’s newest fragrance, ‘Mutiny.’ To coincide with the launch, John made a little collection inspired by gender benders, tech-friendly wearables and digital drifters. Whoa.
The designer’s latest oeuvre was a futuristic, gender distorted formulation of fashion consisting of deconstructed tailored coats with vinyl trim, killer cut-out dresses, provocative pencil skirts, semi-masculine silk-satin suits, shower caps with buckles, and bubblegum pink trenches layered over diaphanous dresses paired with skinny vinyl trousers.
The muses sported shiny patent boots and chunky, metallic takes on the classic Mary-Jane, carrying dainty handbags and billowy, pillowy-soft clutches. It was all fairly high-tech, too, with references to a very fashionable future. John crafted iPhone ankle clamps again and bags with inbuilt iPads/tablets that were quite a cool curiosity.
“It was very liberating, for sure,” said the designer about working on this season’s looks in the latest installment of his ‘The Memory Of…’ podcast. “I’m not trying to make boys look like girls, or girls look like boys, that’s not my intention. But what I’m feeling from this new generation is that they’re questioning traditional values, and everything they stand for. That’s what’s happening and it’s greatly inspiring me.”
“The skirt that, when pulled up onto the model’s shoulders, becomes a cape, and the overcoat cut with the memory of a smoking jacket.”
Margiela simultaneously released its new perfume, ‘Mutiny,’ capturing the brand’s artisanal/avant-garde codes (co-produced with L’Oréal). Engineered by John to embody the ‘deconstructivist and subversive techniques’ that has come to define the house, there are notes of jasmine, vanilla and citrus, as well as a ‘new molecule’ that was developed specifically for ‘Mutiny’ by master perfumer Dominique Ropion.
Embodied in a multi-media campaign featuring six breakout ‘mutinists’ – Willow Smith, Teddy Quinlivan, Sasha Lane, Molly Blair, Princess Nokia and Hanne Gaby Odiele – the fragrance pushes nonconformity, diversity and creativity. Moreover, in a series of short films directed by Fabien Baron, the sartorial sextet vocalize their personal manifestos for what it means to be a mutinist. For Willow Smith, it’s about “creating the rules, then breaking them.’ For Hanne Gaby, it’s all “you can be whatever the fuck you want.” Haha, ok. Check it…
We really love the image campaign shot by the masterful Craig McDean!
