Memo Akten makes manic algo art that will nuke your noodle!
Check out the whizzy ways algorithms process human-like perception and abstract concepts courtesy of frontline artist Memo Akten.
Memo Akten’s ‘Deep Meditations: A Brief History of Almost Everything in Five Minutes’ is brainy, brain-bending and beautiful all at once. The mystic, cryptic visuals seen here reflect transcendental realms, sick ‘style transfer’ techniques, stellar objects with telekinetic halos, and morphing ectoplasmic auras from an algorithm’s point of view.
Hailing from Turkey and living in London, Memo is the Dionysian maverick of experimentation, tech, visual wit and roguish gusto. An artist blending and bending nature’s vicissitudes with bleeding-edge technology, he mashed-up data frames from the photo-sharing website Flickr, pickled them using Python, and then iterated the data set via a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which mimics concept-formation in the human brain (ML-style), mapping the contours of subjective consciousness and inference.
This neo-surreal, totally trippy cyber art is deeply freaky, fundamentally data-driven, figurative and full of intrigue. Exploring humanist themes like ‘love’, ‘art’, ‘life’, and ‘God’ through deep-neural networks made of tensors and hierarchical layers, Memo concatenates and conjures nature, thought and emotion in a dynamic swirl of 0s and 1s, showcasing the stochastic process of nodes/neurons/networks that congeal in lucid, synthetic streams of thought. It’s off the f*^kin’ hook and feels like a magical mushroom hallucination!
The visuals were then coupled with audio generated by another computational algo that synthesized the sounds of spiritual rituals from cultures around the world. In the words of Memo, “the artwork is intended for both introspection and self-reflection, as a mirror to ourselves, our own mind and how we make sense of what we see; and also as a window into the mind of the machine, as it tries to make sense of its observations and memories.” Amazing! Watch this and this and get up to scratch on AI/ML stuff here.
