N.S.A contractor, Harold Thomas Martin, nabbed
During the summer a mysterious group calling itself the “Shadow Brokers” had managed to infiltrate the Equation Group — a super-savvy cyber security outfit attached to the N.S.A., and dumped terabytes of the organization’s top secret source code. The “group” also infamously said that if it received 1,000,000 Bitcoins (worth roughly $560 million bucks), it would publish bucketloads of hacked files. With the breach taking place right in the wake of the infamous hack of the DNC by Guccifer 2.0, speculation swirled that this was another covert Russian FSB op, with even Edward Snowden chiming in on the issue. But just moments ago the New York Times reported that an NSA contractor, Harold Thomas Martin III, age 51, from Glen Burnie, MD was arrested on August 29th, with the FBI investigating whether he is the culprit responsible for lifting the classified codes developed to infiltrate the networks of foreign governments and dark-side hackers. This latest theft of secret data and docs (taken home on a thumbdrive!) by an insider raises the embarrassing prospect that for the second time in three years a subversive employee has managed to steal highly classified information from the N.S.A. In 2013, cyber rascal Edward Snowden, who was also an N.S.A. contractor, took a vast trove of documents that were later passed on to journalists, exposing sensitive surveillance programs. Was Harold Thomas Martin in cahoots with foreign intel agencies? Is he a spook working with the Russians or Chinese? Perhaps he was planning to sell the data to adversaries like Iran and North Korea. Anyway, Harold is now in a world of hurt. We’ll be watching this story closely.
