New Vid – Die Antwoord – ‘ALIEN’
Freaky, cool and totally far-out, Die Antwoord’s newest vid is an existential meditation on lonesomeness.
Die Antwoord are pioneers at making manic music and psycho-surreal constructs where morbidity, magic and magnificence collapse into one another. Their newest video, ALIEN, is a heartfelt and soul-searching story that we can all relate to – especially when it comes to those brooding inner storms of angst and longing.
Estranged and alienated in a derelict part of Detroit, an emo E.T. wallows in her own capacity for confusion and despair. Directed by the band’s cinematic maestro and rat-tailed frontman, the video stars Yolandi as a bummed out reptiloid, moping around town and feeling totally disconnected. The tender tune (it has the cadence of a lullaby) is heartfelt and ethereal, exploring dark moments of depression, loneliness and isolation. The Die Antwoord alien is internally self-conscious and externally insect-like with a penchant for smoking blunts, eating lightning bugs and spawning cool cocoons with mutant offspring and bleach-blonde locks.
Made in cahoots with the mysterious Black Goat and starring the rappers’ lovely daughter (Tommy Can’t Sleep star Sixteen Jones) as the mutant pixie that hatches from the pupal casting, this video is a meditation on the human condition à la Sartre, Camus and obviously Ninja and Yolandi. Watch below…
