Rumours of a Rei Kawakubo Exhibition at the Met

The pioneering designer and Comme des Garçons Commander in Chief is rumored to be the subject of a new spectacle at the Met

One of the industry’s most cryptic characters, COMME des GARÇONS creator Rei Kawakubo has been at fashion’s vanguard for almost 4 decades. Always an enigma wrapped in a riddle (and once labeled ‘Hiroshima chic’ by the press), she is the originator of her own form of anarchical-sartorial mayhem, always thoughtful and disciplined, and always producing unrelenting clothing. Now, fashion’s it-est insurgent looks to be getting a place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The news has yet to be verified, and the Comme PR machine has yet to address the rumors. But if true, the retrospective will open next spring. It will mark the second time in the institution’s history that a living designer would be the singular focus (only once before in 1983 was a show dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent, curated by Diana Vreeland and intended to be the last of its kind — the ultimate adulation to the couturier). According to the Met’s website, “Kawakubo’s empire combines an industrially inspired socialist work ethic with a nearly fanatical desire to purvey clothing as an ever-changing product of its socio-cultural environment, citing both neorealism and futurism in runway collections and advertising.”
