SALEM’s first track in five years

SALEM’s first track in five years

SALEM emerges from hibernation after 5 years

SALEM are the artistic trio hailing from Michigan who helped put ‘witch house’, a musical micro-genre that emphasizes dark electro and synth sounds, on the map. Their sound kills it with clattering drum machines, loud synths, brutal electro rap and all-out sonic darkness. Fine-art photographer and avid SALEM fan Wolfgang Tillmans revealed earlier on his Instagram that the band were rejuvenating their dark art (to some degree), and have remixed the shutterbug’s track “Make It Up As You Go Along.” The mashup appears on Tillmans’s new Device Control EP, whose title track Device Control also features on Frank Ocean’s new visual album, Endless. Think ‘Werewolf bar mitzvah’ mixed with goth, elemental rage, threshing machines and an ominous black river. “The movement of the ocean is so totally beyond our control. It is forever larger than us. It cannot really be grasped, and can be perceived as scary or comforting. By slowing the film down the seawater gets the illusion of different viscosity, more like oil,” said Tillmans. This is their first track in about 5 years. We’ve missed you John Holland, Heather Marlatt and Jack Donoghue!
