Teeming with surrealist tendencies, titties, ass and oodles of sass, The Hole unveils a whole lot of womanism with hypnagogic proportions.
Full of style and guile, feminism and adventurism, ‘Second Smile’ is the newest, NOWEST thing in NYC’s sequestered art scene.
There is always something hella-cool over at The Hole, NYC’s most frontline art mart run by the gifted Kathy Grayson. Despite the sickening Wuhan Virus flare-up with its concomitant death sentences and ‘shelter-in-place’ mandates, the Bowery-based gallery never fails to implement heart-stirring, life-affirming art.
Featuring a rogue batch of 30-plus creatives, ‘Second Smile’ is a wild whirlpool of magic and metaphysics spliced with psychosexual zeal and feminist fun. Crackling with physical ambition and optical spark, the exhibit features badass artists aplenty like Ben Spiers, Cathrin Hoffmann, Jana Euler, Aaron Elvis Jupin, Adam Parker Smith and Alexander Harrison, etc. These select works are pretexts, peepholes and portals to visionary worlds and wacky pizzazz.
Buzzing with offbeat form factors and a synthesis of abstraction and representation, the show is tantalizingly alien, urbane and adolescent in one fell swoop. All exist in a sexy psychic zone radiating moody hues of blood red and dark blue, bathed in dusky twilight. The vibe is batty, mesmerizing and vivacious. The lighting is warm and jolly and we love ♡ the chromatic juxtapositions and striking contrasts.
Viewing via the interwebs only (the gallery is on lockdown like the rest of the world – sighhh), it’s cool how everything undulates, shadowy light saturates the space and the whole shebang embodies an elegant density that suspends you in a soothing daydream.
‘Second Smile’ shows sultry silhouettes, vagina slits and phallic symbols intermingled with carnival props, Mae West lips (the G-spot of the spectacle) and insane imagination. Slick sculptures and cool configurations gush with double-coded metaphors, kinky energy and pretty purple/pink palettes. Titties, titilations, girl power and emotions merge into a vivid viral load.
It’s the sort of surrealism that will ‘bend your curve’ in one way or another providing some welcome escapism from the mind-numbing lethargy brought-on by the apocalyptic ‘Made in China’ bug. As usual with Kathy‘s curation, absurdist themes imbue these fun pieces; fascination guides the eye and escorts you to the edge. In aggregate, this show is a spine-tingling crossfire colliding the pudenda agenda with dreamworld friskiness.
Absorb all the imagery from your quarantine-induced stupor. And peep @thehole for tours, viewings and artistic rapture throughout this existential start-stop roller coaster. ‘Second Smile’ is on through May 24th. Thank you, Kathy Grayson x The Hole!
