“She Said, He Said, We Said…Shii Said“
Shi Fan is the American–Chinese gadabout exploring cosplay, lingerie, surrealist art and fetish-y fashion. Escaping the repressive clutches of commie China as a youngin, Fan made it to Cali at the tender age of eleven with her globe-trotting, freedom-spotting fam. Steeped in painting and abstraction as a kid and armed with a propensity to make zany wearables, she cut her teeth at Parsons in NYC and later honed her craft at CSM in London Town.
Her vision is stormy and euphoric, erotic and exotic with a heavy sci-fi tilt. She flip-flops between realism and fantasy, drawing and collage, dystopian and kawaii. Iridescent and alien-like with a peppy textural flair, her aesthetic melds pastel palettes into skewed geometrics and architectural motifs; a cute-cum-contemplative energy hums and buzzes through it all. She draws ample inspiration from cosplay (コスプレ), anime, Mecha robots, digital art and deconstructivism. She is currently quarantined down in Vietnam (ambushed by the dreadful Wuhan Virus, of course) but creating kick-ass looks nevertheless. We really love Shi Fan’s stuff!
