Spike Jonze x Kenzo World
Kenzo’s Carol Lim and Humberto Leon are pretty superb at creating artistic synergies. They’ve worked with The Doom Generation’s Gregg Araki, Tangerine’s Sean Baker, Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein, and the alpha dog of surrealist cinema himself, David Lynch, on their set design for AW14. Now the fashionistas have partnered with VICE’s art director Spike Jonze, who made Her, Where the Wild Things Are and Being John Malkovich, on an ad campaign for their brand’s new fragrance, Kenzo World.
Titled My Mutant Brain, the commercial sees awesome actress Margaret Qualley perform a bonkers dance routine (choreographed by Ryan Heffington) where she basically undergoes an exorcism at Lincoln Center. There are diabolical convulsions, statue-licking, laser fingers, swan dives, batty acrobatics and bucketloads of off-the-wall special effects (Sam Spiegel provides a hyper-spirited soundtrack with Ape Drums and Assassin). Despite the rather drab green dress and stuffy shoes, this video is a delirious, pulsating mini-drama that will give you tingles in your tummy.
