“Every Wall Is a Door”
Americans are on a precarious vessel, leaderless and rudderless, heading into a summer vortex of vaccine experiments, economic volatility, racial psychodrama and geopolitical jitters. The China-sponsored hologram and current oval office occupant, Joe Biden, along with his psychotic band of Wokesters, are effectively turning the Whole Wide World inside-out and upside-down. Ugh, it’s exhausting and boring, and we’re all really ready for new doors to open and better times to come. Thankfully, Miami’s newest and next-level–est art platform, Superblue, is about to go live! Whoo-hoo!
After a full year of loss and social upheaval, art lovers are finally looking past the annoying pandemic, probing new artistic ecologies and searching for new vistas. And thank goodness for Superblue — an artistic ‘safe space’ situated smack-dab in Miami’s Allapattah hood next to the Rubell Museum (and not too far from Wynwood).
The place crackles with all kinds of visual sweetness, creative zest and computational-artistic prowess. With a curatorial eye centered on interactive art, technological experimentalism and psychic environments, the 50,000 square ft. venue consists of immersive spaces created by badass artists Es Devlin, James Turrell, teamLab, Kohei Nawa, Nick Cave and more.
There are mirrored labyrinths, mystic rivers, sublime portals, soothing mirages, billowing bubbles and blooming bouquets. Superblue allows you to interact with and extract endless epiphanies through immersive modes of sensory/tactile/multimedia symbiosis. “The artists inaugurating Superblue’s first experiential art center offer a glimpse into the breadth of the experiential art movement and the extraordinary possibilities for the public to engage with and activate these kinds of works,” said Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, one of the space’s head honchos and curators. Things speed up and slow down. Reality multiples. Perception warps. No two encounters are ever the same. Pretty fucking cool!
You will love the luminescent LED canvases, phosphorescent collages and digitally-drenched decor that surge, pulse, and are mirrored into infinity as you become one with the art. You can baptize yourself in the primordial/ethereal foam bubbles (‘viral clouds’) of Kohei Nawa, suspend yourself in the spectral sweetness of James Turrell’s moody, mind-bending ‘Ganzfeld‘ lightscapes or trip out via teamLab’s swirling vortex visual wonderland.
The place is truly a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, or ‘total art work’, oozing aesthetic dopamine, VR density and visceral intensity. The only drag is the occasional long lines, mask requirements (soon to be phased out, we hope!) and plastic ponchos for the ‘cloud room’ that are, once discarded, probably hard AF on the environment. Visitors are also asked to don booties like those you might wear in a semiconductor foundry — a minor bottleneck (and possible eco blight?!) as you drone-trance through the colossal space.
But overall Superblue is super dope, hands-down! There’s even a space to snatch up cool, must-have merch, mementos and souvenirs from forward-thinking artists, authors and artisans. Book your tickets for Superblue NOW before they blow out! Address → NW 23 ST and 12th…a few long blocks from Wynwood.
